Dr. V reveals the secrets of Sculptra
Q: What is Sculptra?
Sculptra Aesthetic is a proprietary formulation of poly-l-lactic acid that has been FDA approved as a dermal filler. Unlike other dermal fillers, Sculptra works by stimulating your own natural collagen production and works gradually over time to build volume, filling facial hollows and wrinkles. As one of the top injectors of Sculptra in the nation, it is one of my favorite tools in the antiaging fight!
Q: How long does Sculptra last?
It is, by far, the longest-lasting dermal filler on the market.
That is another amazing feature of Sculptra! 80% of Sculptra users rate their results as good or excellent 25 months after injection. The FDA approval for Sculptra is for a duration of 2 years.
Q: How much does Sculptra cost?
When you consider the longevity of the product, Sculptra is one of the most cost-effective ways to address facial aging and volume loss. Typically, I would say, each treatment consists of two vials of Sculptra, which is enough to treat the entire face. Prices range between $700 to over $1000 per vial depending on geographic location and injector.
Q: What makes Sculptra different than other lifting fillers?
All other dermal fillers have their peak effect immediately after injection with slow degradation of product over the next few months. Sculptra however, continues to improve and work its magic after the injection for up to 6 months, with peak results occurring 3 to 6 months after the treatment. Additionally, a series of 2 to 3 Sculptra treatments spaced about a month or 2 apart, are usually recommended in order to see optimal results depending, of course, on the degree of volume loss. In addition, Sculptra improves skin quality much more than other fillers. It decreases pore size, increases glow, and even improves fine lines and wrinkles.
Q: Is Sculptra safe?
YES, absolutely! Sculptra has been used successfully as a facial injectable since the 1980’s when it was first studied and approved for HIV facial atrophy. In fact, I consider Sculptra to be safer than all other dermal fillers because of its liquid consistency, which makes it much less likely to cause arterial occlusion and the dreaded skin necrosis.
Q: What are the side effects of Sculptra?
As with any other facial injectable, there is always a chance for temporary swelling and bruising, and rarely, infection. Also rarely, small nodules or lumps can form under the skin, which are collagen bundles, but they typically resolve on their own within a few weeks. Nearly all of these side effects, however, are avoidable with proper injection technique.
Q: Does Sculptra hurt?
There is slight discomfort associated with any facial injectable. However, with proper numbing and icing of the skin, the pain is minimized and completely tolerable. Sculptra is mixed with lidocaine at the time of injection, which also further reduces discomfort.
Q: What’s up with the Sculptra Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)? Does it really work?
Ahhhh….the BBL! One of the newest innovations for Sculptra use is for increasing volume and lift to the buttocks. Once again, using a series of injections of Sculptra to the buttocks, especially to the upper portion, we can create significant volume, define shape, and lift. Results rival surgical augmentation and best of all, the treatment is very safe and has zero downtime, 2 things that surgery cannot promise.
